Bridleless training

Hallo

Since I started training this way I have a great new relationship with my horse. She learned to trust me and she has shown me a very friendly side of her, which I haven't seen before. Here is where I learned it, does anyone else here work with bridleless training?
sara

Bridleless Training
By Palm Lynn

Bridleless Training is for the rider as well as for any breed of horse in any discipline. The important benefit of the rider's use of seat and leg aids is stressed, taking the emphasis off the hand aids which allows the rider to communicate more clearly with the horse. You become a more confident rider and improve rider balance problems caused by improper use of your hands. You'll learn to read your horse and understand where he carries his natural balance. This DVD provides excellent training techniques for older horses, for horses that have problems accepting a bit, and is excellent for horses that show signs of resistance as it provides a technique to get them to slow down and accept what they are doing. Using horses in different stages of training, Lynn demonstrates steps that must be followed and carefully evaluated before you advance. Ground training, numerous types of maneuvers, and many stages of training were involved in this unique bridleless training method. The final segment demonstrates the advanced horse, using Rugged Lark to show you the results of training through Love, Acceptance, Respect, and Kindness. This DVD can help you mark a new beginning in the relationship you have with your horse. However, always remember the many safety tips Lynn uses as an important part of all you do whether you are riding and or training.

DVD

you can find out more about the dvd, when you go to http://www.horsesinyourmailbox.com/

He was very patient and gracious as we decked him out, and when we turned him loose, he didn't roll - he pranced.

Horses and people: why are they mostly women?

Hey all I've had a couple of horses now for almost two years. They're great pals. I do everything with and for them. Take long rides, short rides, overnighters into the back country of where I live, you name it. But whenever I read about horses and people it's usually about 99% women who are associated with horses. Im surprised at that and wonder why more men aren't into horses. I mean when you consider that back in the old west it was 99% men and horses....makes you wonder. Was it because men back then looked at horses purely as transportation and when that changed so did mens associations with horses? Do men and women have different attitudes toward horses nowadays? Is there like some kind of stigma attached to men having horses nowadays which would be fucked up if that was true? So, thats what I was wondering and would like to hear your opinions, cool? Billy

Renegade Ranch in the Moss Beach/Montara area (near Half Moon Bay, on
the coast south of San Francisco and west of Woodside) is under
quarentine following diagnosis of several horses with the neurological
form of EHV-1. Two horses were diagnosed, taken to UC Davis,
and then later euthanized. There are several threads on the bayequest
have actual facts (look for the posts by Sunny). Also see the post that

I've been reading a lot about the strasser method and leaving horses barefoot. I'm very interested in it, and would like to hear from anyone who has taken a horse from shod to barefoot. I tried removing just my gelding's back shoes, and he was so lame for two weeks he could barely walk. He has white feet and lives on a hill with some stones. Its SoCal, so there's no grass. I couldn't stand to see him hobbling around, so i broke down and put the shoes back on.
I might try it again, any thoughts?

Carrying supplies on English Saddles

I found a Crosby Marathon saddle, which is fairly well built and fits my horse and my fat ass but it still needs some major work to fit attachments that will with stand weight and wear. I live in Arizona and going out exploring with out sufficient water is suicidal. I saw some saddle pads that have pockets sewn into them but it would seem to me they would put to much pressure on the spine

I have an old Army Phillips saddle that was perfect for trail riding except its 70 years old and now retired. It has pommel pockets that fit into a socket on the saddle that are flush and do not interfere when the pockets are not in use, and a shelf that attached to the cantle for carrying saddle bags and keeping the weight and chafing off the spine and loins. I thought about having it rebuilt but it is a family heirloom and I do not want to destroy its value.

So how do you folks carry your stuff? Anybody got any Ideas?

Are horses, horses or underpaid comedians

Are horses, horses or underpaid comedians :~}

My horse Patrick has always lived outdoors, never in a barn. He comes from the ZX ranch an old fashion "Buckaroo Ranch"
http://www.westernhorseman.com/stories/02272006/ran_20060227002.shtml

I got him 3 days before he was to fly to Morocco to be in the film Hidalgo. He had been in City Slickers II, and Kurt Russell's "Tomb Stone"

So he has always had a job in ranching or movies, but he is the biggest baby. I think if he could he climb into my lap and sleep, he would.

But when it comes to putting water on him, I might as well be using GASOLINE no matter how I do, then after he's washed.... he fall's sound asleep. Wakes then I let him out.
If he even sees a camera, he's over like a bullet. I'll be shooting another horse, he's got to be in the foto.
He loves lifesavers, drinks PEPSI from can or bottle.

He's my funny man, what makes your horse a ham? They are really funny just to watch

Mud packed sore hoofs

Peggy has been lame, and it seems to be due to having her hoofs pack full of mud, she is immediately a lot less lame after her hoofs are picked out.

Unfortunately, she's stabled 40 minutes away and I simply can't afford the time/gas to go there and pick out her hoofs daily, plus even daily she's still mud-packed and sore again by the next day.

Shoeing is not an option (she's a big draft horse, and she's a rescue who isn't totally comfortable having her hoofs handled, trimming her is difficult enough as it is).

Has anyone here tried vasoline on the horse's sole to help keep mud from packing/sticking? Did it work?

http://www.hajinc.com/clickit.php?affid=1109
The really unique thing about it is that it uses real color genetics to decide the color of horses you breed. Its better than lots of other games I've tried, with a very cool owner and an active membership.

horses and healing

The letter below is a heartfelt outpouring of need for a change in my son's life. This is not a junk solicitation. If anyone has any ideas for funding or wants to co-sponsor a horse please contact me. I am hoping to attract attention to this struggling riding school in Nicasio. This would be a great place to donate money, time, skills (grant writing, marketing, etc.). I also would like to raise money to keep a particular horse at the ranch. He is invaluable.

August 22, 2006
So what does a mother do when she sees something that could save her son’s life? Personally, I can’t find the time to sleep. It’s 4 am and last night I found out the horse my son is working with at a local, holistic riding school is up for sale. Not because he’s a bad horse or he’s untrainable or even unwanted, but the basic reality of living in Marin County on a limited income has limited the possibilities for a riding school run by a single mother. A single mother who is a Marriage and Family Therapist, a riding instructor and EAGALA certified (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association).

The horse, named Taylor, is my son’s newest relationship. I came across this horse while volunteering time at the riding school. He challenged me quite a few times while I was leading him to either pasture or stall by causing trouble along the way . . . backing into other horses, lethargically moving when I was in a hurry and a number of other maneuvers to test my mettle. It began to occur to me how much this horse was like my teenage son. Two days ago my son met this horse and for the first time in years I saw my son willing to go on a physically strenuous hike in the redwoods instead of beg to go home and sit in front of the computer or TV. I thought when he realized what the group of horses and humans were going to do he would argue his way out of the hike, but to my surprise he wanted to be near this horse. So for two hours he led various horses with smaller children on their backs and also had the opportunity to lead Taylor. Along the way, my son was met with this adolescent horse’s way of pushing boundaries . . . small things like refusing to move, insisting on a meal when it’s time to work and other general, but effective ways of testing a human’s sense of leadership. He was met with a mirror. You see . . . horses are really great teachers effectively mirroring personal issues and giving you a healthy dose of your own medicine. My son met his rebelliousness face to face and the following day wanted to go back. I think this horse and my son may have something to learn together.

My son is of mixed heritage . . . African-American, Native American and Caucasian. The world generally sees him as a young, black male. To meet cultural expectation he has adopted a tough exterior, feigned being a gang member, failed school, claimed to be from Compton and has even gone as far as turning to drugs. None of these things are his truth. I know my son. I know his heart and it has been a painful journey to witness my son fall into what American culture expects of him. Today my son goes to a Juvenile Court hearing. Lapses in judgment have led him to this place. He will be placed on formal probation today and be an active participant in the Juvenile Justice system. For many young men in this position, especially those of color, this is the beginning of an end no mother would want for her child. I am determined to not let this be so for my son, but I digress.

Alane Freund, the visionary and trainer of Friendly Trails Riding School, is struggling to make ends meet in one of the richest counties in the country. Taylor, the perfect ‘therapy horse’ for rebellious, adolescent boys is up for sale. For many years, this single mom has been creating a herd for therapeutic intervention. She is now in a position, because of the cost of board and feed, of having to cull her herd and cut her losses. I am also determined not to let this happen. This letter is my plea for financial help. It costs $500 per month to board and feed a horse. This doesn’t include the cost of veterinary and farrier bills, not to mention the luxuries of bodywork for horses that work hard every day. These horses work with children, adolescents and adults from all socio-economic backgrounds. Please, if you can help by connecting us with funding or even providing funding I would be ever so grateful. It may just save my son’s life.

Sincerely,
Melanie C.

Hello,
I need some help on a question.
Today my horse got out., as he doesn't stray far away from "his" pony, he got to all the fresh green grass he wanted., now, he does get to eat grass, but its only for about an hour. I keep checking on him, but i was woundering how long does it take a horse to colic from eating to much? I will be checking on him all night but, should I be scared to go to work and leave him tomorrow?

I live in a climate that gets VERY hot during the summer months, and I recently invested in a quick-dry, long-sleeve shirt from REI, and a pair of Georg Schumacher breeches.

What do you wear that gets you through those hotter-than-blazes summer days? Do you cover up to stay protected, or strip down to get ventilated?

One Tough Decsion I Have Made

My whole life for the past 33, about to be 34 years my life has revolved around horses and they truly are in my blood, but it has come time to say goodbye to my horse life. This has been a long time coming for me for the last year or so and I continuously asked myself if I was doing the right thing? Can I imagine life without horses in it? No, but can I imagine my life without my own horse? Yes, so I finally came to know what I must do. I sent my mare down to a friend's farm in Missisippi in November and she is doing great and loving life and the kids are riding her bareback (something I never did with her), so I know I did her well by this. This was a mare I raised from foal and had treated for colic at a clinic and spent over $4,000.00 on to save her life so Bug will always be a big part of my heart. She is doing well, so all is good with her.

Now, the toughest part is I am starting the process of finding a happy home for my dear, sweet, willing, loving and game gelding, Dusty Bucks. I feel I have been parlaying him for the last several months (he has not been neglected, but I have only been doing the necessities with him and most of the time do not even want to go to the barn even, my heart just isn't in it any longer), so now I am on the mission of finding him the "right" home, as he will never, ever, ever go to the Amish or for meat, if that ever was to happen, I couldn't live with the guilt), so to insure this never happens, I have a lot of screening ahead of me to know he will be taken care of. This horse is the one single horse in my life that I have bonded with like no other and was the most fun horse I have ever had or had the pleasure to work with and ride. Some of the times when I rode him, every other probem in my crappy life ceased to exist. It was just Dusty and me as one. This is a feeling I will cherish for the rest of my life and beyond, but it is now time to move on from the horses. I feel I am at a point in my life that I need to embrace new experiences that I can not do as a horse owner. I am feeling quilt, sadness and heartbreak as I made this decision. In the last four or five months he has been ridden like three times and he LOVES to be worked. Please, guys, I just need support from other horse peeps that I am doing the right thing for this horse, as I feel I can't anymore, reason being, my heart has gone out. I feel like I am giving up a child, but then again, Dusty is a big 'ole chunk of my heart, so I guess in a way I am. Thanks for listening guys.

I'm thinking of getting one for my fiance to use. He doesn't ride that often, but my saddles are too small for him (they pinch his man parts). I think I can get one for $200-$300. Has anyone used one? How are they? What is the quality like? I've seen them in the store, and they actually look pretty good for such an inexpensive saddle...

Hi all,
I have posted this in another horse tribe, but so far no luck.
My mare and I are dying for some trail riding company this year.
We have acess to amazing BLM trails that go and go and go, but unfortuanatly I don't have a trailer, so I am a bit limited. I don't know anybody close enough to ride with.
Anyone out there who is close enough to ride with us?
I live in Cheshire, Oregon. (close to Eugene and Corvallis)

Keeping content in The Horse's Mouth on-topic in the new Tribe layout

Since Tribe has changed the layout of tribes, the default view jumbles discussion posts with listings, events, requests and reviews. Previously off-topic listings and such were compartmentalized away from discussion posts, but now they get mixed in. So I'm instituting a policy that only items that are "on topic" for this tribe can be published to this tribe. If you create a Tribe listing that isn't about horses, please don't publish it to the Horse's Mouth when you publish your listing. I'm removing all off-topic listings - it's a boring chore but this way we help keep this tribe focused on horses! Thank you.

Painter is currently held in Washington "horse death camp" - a feedlot where he is being fattened for the slaughter house. His bail is $725.00, the amount of money the feedlot owner would receive from the "meat man" (buyer for slaughter house). You can read about Painter and the work of the Columbia Basin Equine Rescue at www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org/f...l. Painter is still in eminent danger. He has yet to make his bail. View his picture in tribe's albulm.

Hi all! I'm on the hunt for a truck appropriate for hauling horses. My horse is 1100lbs, and I'll likely just be hauling him. I'm thinking of a steel tag-along (vs gosseneck) trailer vs aluminum, but am open to suggestion (Brederrup is not an option).

Hi Everyone,

I'm an equine photographer based in Los Altos CA (SF Bay Area). I'm available to be the photographer at YOUR next bay area show, as well as for ranch/farm/stable calls to do portraits (of you and your horse, or just your horse), conformation and sales shots, stallion promotion shots, foal photos, etc. My website is www.equinephotoart.com

I'm also looking for models for some horse/art photography. If you are local to me and are interested in modeling for me, send me a message!

So, who else is as sick of the shedding hair as I am? I think my babies have been shedding now for about the last 6 weeks. Hope they are done soon.
Am so ready for it to stay warm too so they can get baths. They are so dirty from winter and dandruffy and itchy.

A brief Conversation with my Arab Mare

I stepped onto my deck this morning to drink my coffee, made eye contact with my mare and had a short conversation. Went something like this:

Good morning Shatza!
Hello Human...say, I am pretty hungry here..shouldnt you feed me?
umm..I just did about 2 hours ago.
Yes, that's my point..I am hungry now! You should let me out to eat grass.
I could but then Nooner will get out and cause trouble, you know how she is.
pff...she is a cow! Well...I will run to the gate...you let me out before Nooner comes over and I get to eat grass!

ya....that could work..how about we go riding today instead?

No way..that is way too much work and besides what's in it for me?

I will give you grass after?

No I dont think so Human. You have to catch me first and I am pretty fast as you know. Besides it's fun watching you ineptly run to try and catch me. That is what I call fun!

Humm..well I dont think I am that goofy looking when I run...OK,I could bribe you with grain, you always fall for that.

Look human, I dont "Fall for it" as you say. I know what you are doing..I am just sooooo hungry I cant resist. How about this...you come here and open the gate before we have a problem!

ummm..I think my phone is ringing..gotta go.
Venus is growing up!

I had intended for yesterday to be a "nothing much" day and just work on some clicker training in the round pen. We did that (working on going long and low), and then I setup a small 1 stride in-and-out (x rail to barrels) for her to jump over at liberty a few times, then we went in to groom and trim her hoofs.

While grooming the stable owner came by, and I asked her if she had a surcingle. She thought she did, but all we found was a harness box and I couldn't find the part that goes under the belly, just the part that goes over the back. I'd been playing with the saddle pad and Venus couldn't have cared less, so I brought out my wintec jumping saddle and set it on her. Ho hum. So I brought the girth under and let her feel it all about her belly. Ho hum. So I buckled it loosely and took her for a walk. Ho hum. I tightened the girth. Ho hum. I took her into the arena and worked her at a trot in both directions. Ho hum.

I took her into the round pen, removed the lead rope and sent her about at the canter. Ho hum. Finally I let down the stirrups. Even at the trot she was fine, but when she went into the canter she started snaking her head at her sides, irritated at the stirrups, and then bucked a few times. And that was IT. No bucking the second time I sent her off at a canter, no bucking when we went the other way. Back to Ho Hum.

What a good girl! I think I'm going to end up riding her this year after all. She's really coming into her balance, and she's taking to all the grown-up things without any problems at all. :-)

Greetings all!

My name is Danielle, I'm 19 and reside in Western Pennsylvania. My family and I manage a ride-by-hour stable in the Cook Forest area.
It's a big responsibility maintaining the care and well being of our many horses, let alone the happiness of our customers (though I definetly love my horses more than them...hehe)
I joined in hopes of discovering people with the same interests and hobbies as I and to learn tips and tricks of how others care for their horses.

Hi all, I was reading some of the posts and decided to join your tribe. I had horses all my life up til a couple years ago. I gave my last one to my Uncle, so I still get to see him. He's a National Show Horse named Strut.

I used to work as a trail guide with Strut and I miss riding every day for hours on end, maybe one day I'll be back at it. I've done a lot of work with high energy horses in the past though, and as I get older I don't heal as fast. I used to be able to take a fall (fortunately not too often) but lately I have concerns about injuries. Even the old ones are coming back to haunt me. Strut messed up my knee when I first bought him. He had a habit of flipping over. Fortunately, he landed on his side, unfortunately my leg was under him. He doesn't do that any more, but I paid the price. It's been 10 years, and my knee never did heal 100%.

I ride a Harley now. It eats less and I don't have to shovel up after it. Of course it doesn't show me any affection, and I miss the smell of the stables... weird, huh?

Well, I came out here to Tribe to promote my band Wild Goose Chasers, but it's nice to see so many horse people around.

Stop by and check out our music if you get a chance. It's free...

Hi everyone!

It sure is good to see some activity in this tribe again. :-)

I thought I'd share the latest with my baby:

http://s89108059.onlinehome.us/venus-2005/

Venus is a Percharab. Her Percheron dam Peggy is 18.2 hands. Her sire Khai was just a hair shy of 16 hands (big for an Arabian). She is bred to be a sporthorse. Depending on how well she does with the round pen work this spring/summer, I may start her under saddle this year, or I may wait another year and let her grow some more and find her balance.

Just popping in to say hi before I head out for the weekend. We are getting together with some friends this weekend to ride at Rayburn tomorrow. Can't wait. Although I am a little nervous. And almost decided to not go. I'm not too sure how my horse will do on the steep hills. Last time we rode there he acted up really bad. And since we will be on narrow trails in the woods I have flashbacks of busting my head on a tree. arrghh! But I need to get over it and saddle up. Well I hope everyonehas a great weekend. Happy Trails....I hope lol.

Was pulling Angel out of her stall yesterday and she fell down. It was the strangest thing. She didn't bolt the door... she didn't whip around the door or spook there wasn't debris or spilled oil or show sheen spilled, she's not shod but still??? she was walking one minute and flat on the ground on her side the next... anywho... she fell, climbed back up, shook her head and kept walking like it was nothing... I was expecting one of her arab fits... some head tossing and back peddling at the very least... nada... just walked on then stood grazing while I went over her... no cuts or scrapes... she's not off at all... going to do another check this evening to be sure there is no swelling or anything... it was so surreal...

Wild Horse Slaughter~ Pettion

The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign

1971: An unprecedented public outcry moves Congress to unanimously pass the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act, granting federal protection to America’s wild horses and burros, and declaring that they are “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.”

2 million wild horses once roamed the West; fewer than 32,000 remain ... Since 1971, wild horses have been wiped out from 40 million acres ... 6 Western states have lost their entire wild horse populations ... 22,000 wild horses are currently held in government holding facilities ... The government plans to remove another 9,300 horses by 2005 ... Cattle outnumber wild horses at least 100 to 1 on public lands ... The removal policy is costing over 29 million tax-dollars a year ...

2004: U.S. Senator Conrad Burns (R-Montana) slips into the 3,300-page federal budget a rider that opens the door to the slaughter of thousands of wild horses. The 1971 Act is eviscerated without so much as a hearing or opportunity for public review.

The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign is dedicated to preserving the American wild horse in viable free-roaming herds for generations to come, as part of our national heritage.

An aggressive wild horse removal campaign is currently under way by the U.S. government — at the cost of millions of taxpayer dollars. The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) removal policy is contrary to the spirit of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act. The Act was the result of an unprecedented public outcry and unquestionably reflects the will of the American people; its intent was to preserve wild horses and burros as part of our national heritage.

Over the past 30 years, under pressure from special interest groups and in blatant disregard of the public’s wishes, the BLM has systematically favored subsidized livestock grazing on public lands to the detriment of wild horse populations. The Burns Amendment was the last nail in the coffin of federal wild horse protection, opening the door to the slaughter of thousands of these living symbols of our Nation’s spirit.

We are coordinating a grassroots campaign to counter the Burns Amendment and obtain a Congressional investigation into the government’s wild horse management policies.
In addition to countering the Burns Amendment, our goal is to obtain:

the review of scientific findings that contradict BLM's claims of wild horse overpopulation and negative impact on the range;
a moratorium on round-ups until actual numbers of wild horses and burros on public lands have been independently assessed; and
implementation of in-the-wild management, which would save millions of tax-dollars.

Please take action now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign was started by a coalition of wild horse advocates and public interest groups in the summer of 2004. It was conceived as a campaign, as opposed to a new “group,” specifically to allow its participants to present a united front for the horses’ sake; it is not a fundraising operation, but a unifying tool with a firm grassroots base.

At this critical juncture, we are happy to see the media and various organizations draw from the continually updated information and research found on this site, and we hope it will be helpful in educating the public on the plight of the American wild horse.

The AWHPC Coalition includes:

Return to Freedom (The American Wild Horse Sanctuary)
U.S. Public Interest Research Group
American Humane
American Horse Defense Fund
Wild Horse & Burro Freedom Alliance
Wild Horse Spirit
Wild Horse Observers Association

AWHPC • Take Action

The battle for our wild horses will be won in the court of public opinion. The government needs to face a sustained public outcry over its wild horse management practices. It is our responsibility to not let the issue die out over the New Year.

Below is a list of suggestions to help keep up the noise. Please check this page regularly for updated action alerts.

Please write your U.S. representative and two U.S. senators to protest the recent amendment to the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act introduced by Senator Burns as a rider to the 2005 Appropriations Bill, and to request a Congressional investigation into the government’s wild horse management practices. Specifically:

Inform them that the Burns Amendment to the 1971 Act will lead to the slaughter of this beloved part of our national heritage to supply horsemeat for human consumption abroad.

Denounce the subversion of the democratic process that allowed a law enacted with major popular support to be eviscerated without so much as a hearing or opportunity for public review.

Tell them that your tax-dollars would be better spent on an in-the-wild management program not based on removal.

Denounce the undue influence of private cattle interests on public land management.

Urge a call for a moratorium on round-ups until actual numbers of wild horses on public lands have been independently assessed.
Make sure to include your full name and address and to ask for a response on how your representative intends to address your concerns. Be firm but courteous.

Letters to Senators should be addressed to: The Honorable [Name Here], U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510. Letters to House of Representatives should be addressed to: The Honorable [Name Here], U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515. Visit www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to identify your representative and senators in D.C.

Your letters matter: in assessing public opinion, Congress counts each letter received as the opinion of ten people. Please note that letters sent by physical mail make a stronger statement than emails, which are too easily dismissed. Click here for examples of eloquent support letters.

It is also important that we keep the pressure on Senator Conrad Burns (MT), who introduced the wild horse slaughter amendment, and Senator Harry Reid (NV), a primary supporter of the Burns Amendment. They need to hear from their constituents as well as from concerned citizens from all states protesting this underhanded bit of legislation. Click here for a commentary on Senator Reid's standard response to public concern over the Burns Amendment.

Do not hesitate to also let Bureau of Land Management officials know how you feel about their removal policy and the sale of wild horses at livestock auctions. Request a moratorium on these sales and implementation of an in-the-wild management program. Contact Robert Abbey, Nevada State Director, Bureau of Land Management, 850 Harvard Way, Reno, NV 89502-2055 and Kathleen Clarke, Director, Bureau of Land Management, 1849 C Street NW Rm. 406-LS, Washington, D.C. 20240. Click here for a commentary on BLM’s standard response to public concern.

Please send copies of your letters to AWHPC, P.O. Box 926, Lompoc, CA 93438. Email copies are also acceptable and should be sent to letters@wildhorsepreservation.com. They will be collected and forwarded in bulk to relevant government officials.

Spread the Word

Our strength is in numbers. Below are suggestions on how to help spread the word about this Campaign and the plight of our wild horses:

Alert the media, local and national. Write letters to the editor expressing your outrage.

Tell your family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and classmates about the Campaign; email them this link to our petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/166841148

Download the AWHPC flyer in PDF form, print it up and post copies at your local stores, equestrian centers, parks, etc.

Add a link to this site in your email signature line or on your website. Click here for a .jpg version of the AWHPC logo (right click and 'Save As').

Full-page adds placed by AWHPC supporters in their local papers have proven very effective in getting the word out.

A concerned and active citizenry can affect federal legislation, even in the face of opposition from vested-interest groups. In 1971, an unprecedented letter-writing campaign conducted by schoolchildren across the country was instrumental in securing the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act. Some of the letters were eloquent in their simplicity, showing more wisdom and common sense than all of the testimony of the scientists and wildlife managers combined. One letter from Kathy Burns from west Greenwich, Rhode Island, reasoned:

"When they say to you, What good are they?
meaning the horses. The horses are plenty
good. They're beautiful. Consider this."

On behalf of the horses, thank you for your support.

Please take action quickly..time is of the essence.
Hoping for miracles.......Saahira

Sale of Wild Horses to Slaughter Legalized

Thu Dec 9,12:01 AM ET White House - AP Cabinet & State

By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Wild horses and burros could be bought or sold for slaughter under a provision in the $388 billion spending bill that President Bush (news - web sites) signed into law on Wednesday.

The new law lets the animals be sold, potentially for use as meat in foreign markets, if they are more than 10 years old or, if younger, after they have been offered unsuccessfully for adoption three times. It also requires any money from sales to go to the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management (news - web sites) adoption program for wild horses and burros.

Sen. Conrad Burns (news, bio, voting record), R-Mont., who sponsored the amendment to the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, said he believed most horses would wind up being adopted, not slaughtered, but his intent was to spur the BLM to get serious about its adoption program.

"These animals live in poor conditions that often lead to their deaths, and without proper management this will continue to happen," Burns said Wednesday.

"And while their sale is a last resort, it is our hope that bringing this problem to light will motivate the federal agencies and horse advocates alike, and offer new opportunities to find these animals proper, caring homes," he said.

BLM spokeswoman Celia Boddington said the new law had not yet been analyzed by officials there to see how they will comply with it. "Since 1973, we have placed 203,000 animals in good homes, and we're looking forward to continuing our adoptions with the public," she said.

Advocates of wild horses described Burns' provision as inhumane, misguided and likely to reduce the genetic pool.

"There's going to be less individuals and more chances of inbreeding," said Karen A. Sussman, president of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros in Lantry, S.D. "Right now there really is little to no inbreeding in herds."

Sussman, who manages three wild horse herds, said cattle, not wild horses, are the main culprit in overgrazing of public lands. She called the 10-year-old cutoff for adoptions arbitrary and unnecessary.

Thousands of the wild animals, mostly horses, have been sent to slaughterhouses, sold for a profit and processed as meat mainly for Europeans. But since 1997, that illegal trade has been reduced by making adopters sign an affidavit they don't plan to sell an adopted animal for slaughter.

Government corrals and sanctuaries around the country hold more than 20,000 wild horses and burros. Another 32,290 wild horses and 4,845 wild burros roam among herd management areas on public lands in 10 Western states: Nevada, Wyoming, California, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and New Mexico.

To save money, the BLM hopes to trim the animals in management areas to 26,000 by 2006.

home remedies for horses...

I'm interested to find out what everyone's favorite home remedies are. You know, things that you learned from other horsepeople (or figured out for yourself) that make horse care simpler, cheaper and easier.
My two favorites:
1)I use listerine in a spray bottle for dandruff, tail rubbing, and that icky stuff on my gelding's hind cannon bones. It works great!
2)adding vinegar to my fly spray lets me cut the amount of fly spray concentrate I use. It keeps the flies away well, eliminates the greasy coat you sometimes get, and it makes Willy smell like a pickle.

What else is out there?

Any one have a suggestion?

Aside from "take carrots", does anyone have any tips for me?

My Moose is rubbing herself raw. She has started scratching and rubbing herself on every available surface and has opened up sores in several spots including under her fly sheet and she did it in a very short amount of time (2-3days). We ’ve had the vet out of course and she said it looked like a severe allergic reaction to something. The thing is nothing in her diet, grooming etc has changed. We checked with the property owners they didn ’t change the auto-fly spray juice, and the shavings are from the same supplier. None of the other horses are having issues. We ’ve put up a sign not to give her treats etc …at the vets recommendation we ’re not using any fly spray/creme or anything like that on her at the moment. She was given a shot to try to alleviate some of the itching and swelling and she ’s getting Benedryl twice a day now …Our vet mentioned that it might have been the mineral block she ’s been getting. Last summer we started using the mineral block that claims to aid in the control of flies (can ’t think of brand etc right now) they sell it in all of the feed stores in the area. She seemed fine on it …but the vet said that there was a potential lawsuit in the works against the manufacturer because the block had made many horses sick and some of them had even died …

I had not heard anything about this prior and I can ’t find anything online about it.

Anybody???

I was wondering if anyone has lost their nerve and managed to get over it? I quit jumping from a canter a few years ago after a bad fall (unceremoniously dumped into the wing, three vertebrae knocked out of place) and took over 2 years to try again. I still have a hang-up about jumping, particularly fences over 2 foot 6 - although cross-poles aren't a problem. Anybody have any advice/tips on getting over a fear like this? I'm not aiming for Badminton, but it would be nice to know I can clear any natural fences I encounter.

Venus has been dubbed (for the nonce) Venus-the-Menace. She managed to get tangled in a cattle guard and come out with just superficial injuries. The entire story is here:

training tips

I was wondering if anyone had some good input on some useful training tips. I recently started my 3 year old colt (first time breaking) and am having problems with him standing still mounting and dismounting. He's real skittish (always has been) and spooks when I go to get off, and walks around me in circles when I try to get on. Is standing still for that something that comes with time, or something I make him do each time? I've only ridden him about 5 or 6 times so far, and don't want to sour him in any way, or teach him bad habits. Any input?

does anyone know anyone who needs a used tack trunk? I have one that's in pretty good condition. I just bought a new one in my barn's colors, and need to find a home for the old one. I live in the (SF) east bay but commute up to petaluma to ride. I have a truck and will deliver (within reason)! call me! 510-823-1113 -Jen

Cinch sores

Hello all,
My mare seems to be especially susceptible to cinch/girth sores. She spent about a year without a saddle, and when I put one on her now, it’s rubbing off the hair in a couple of places. I have tried a mohair and a neoprene girth. Both seem to be rubbing. Part of the problem is that I ride with my cinch on the loose side, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem with any of the other horses I ride. Does her skin need to toughen a bit? Should I tighten up? I really want to make he comfortable. (Yes, the saddle is a good fit. Yes, I allow her to heal completely before saddling again. It actually hasn’t gotten to the level of a sore, but I’m sure that’s what the rubbed skin would turn into if ignored.) Please let me know if anyone else has had similar problems. Thanks!
-Sara

Are your horses shedding yet?

Mine started shedding in mid-January last year, and it has been warm this past week, so I'm wondering if they will have gobs of loose hair when I get down to the pasture this Saturday.

Clipping your horse.

this is for the California Bay Area:

So do you think it's to late in the season to body clip your horse? I have a dapple iron gray, and I was reading in _Grooming to Win_ that clipping the new summer coat that is coming in could make the coat dull. He usually has a lovely soft slick summr coat, and I'm afraid it won't be as nice. I'm also afraid it might make him look whiter (I'm not ready for him to be white yet!).

He does need to be clipped if I'm goign to keep working him. Poor guy gets to hot to quick. He's in a 16x14 paddock and wears blankets most of the time, so I'm not worried about him being cold.

Oh, and do you think that the weather here is cool enought to warrant a quarter sheet on a body clipped horse? I thought it would be the polite thing to do, beign as he'd be all naked and all. :)

Any thoughts?

I'm Elizabeth. I have ridden for almost 9 years now and currently own a 6 year old Thoroughbred named Shifting Ground (barn name is Mochi) - he is also, as a matter of fact, a member of Tribe. Mochi and I have been together since last summer when he finished his racing career. I have evented for a few years and Mochi and I are currently competing at Novice level. We want to go up to Intermediate (maybe Advanced) eventually. We also love dressage (we focus on the classical Spanish and French styles) and foxhunting. Mochi has learned a few "tricks" and we work at liberty together once a week.
I am a big fan of the Akhal-Teke breed (used to own one), as well.
Mochi and I are in Woodside, CA.

ticks, ick!

Peggy and Venus are currently in a pasture that is overgrown and used to have cows in it. Yesterday Venus was covered with ticks on the underside of her neck, jaw, bottom of her belly, under her tail, etc. I removed what I could, and sprayed those areas liberally with fly spray. Venus didn't seem to mind having all those ticks on her, or mind having them removed, but I'd like to do something to help keep her from getting them so badly.

I know that when you worm a horse with ivermectin that any ticks that were biting the horse at that time are killed, and I'm going to worm her next weekend so that should help, but it's not a long term solution.

A) Does anyone know if the feed-thru wormer affects ticks?

B) Does anyone have a fly-spray that works on ticks and lasts more than 1 day?

Thanks!

PMU Horses need homes!

Hi fellow horse fans!
If you (or someone you know) are interested in rescuing and adopting a horse (or horses) please go to http://www.pmurescue.org

There are 120 horses- mostly pregnant mares, who need to find safe, loving homes. Many are quarter horses and draft crosses.

If you aren't familiar with PMU horses, you can learn more at the web site mentioned above. PMU- Pregnant Mare Urine is the main ingredient in hormone replacement drugs like Premarin.

I don't want to get into the ethics and issues in this forum necessarily- I just would like your help in spreading the word that these horses need homes- and soon!

Thanks so much!

what kind of music is your horse?

Peggy is like the Bass guitar in a band. She steps more slowly than other horses do, but she has more impact than you might think, and with good rhythm she gets there just as fast as the other horses.

Venus is like LeAnn Rimes was a few years ago a teenager with typical teenager likes and dislikes, such as when LeAnn did that cell phone ad ("what can I say, I'm a teenager, I love phones" :-). She loves to chat with the other horses, and to look about to see what's going on. I hope she will mature just like LeAnn has.

Khai was like Nickle Creek. Their music is country, but it's also jazzy, and it also has a lot of rock-n-roll. It's cool, it swings, it makes you want to tap your feet. That was Khai. He could dress up and do dressage, or go out and chase cows, or go on a rock-n-roll trail ride. Or smooth talk the ladies (mares) with his soft nicker.

finding a new boarding situation

Since Khai is gone, I no longer need a boarding stable that is "stallion friendly". The present place was perfect for him, but it's not really very good for Peggy, and not at all good for Venus. They both should be out on pasture, but I need access to good facilities for when I'm working with them. I need somewhere to put up a tack building (I need more space than is usually available in a communal tack room), and a good hitching rack with firm level footing where I can trim hoofs etc. I also would like access to an arena and/or round pen, and to trails.

Is this hoping for too much?

I'm living in Mountain View CA (near San Jose), and the present barn is in Watsonville. That's about as far as I'm willing to drive. Ideally, I'd like them closer. However, two places that are "close" that don't work for me are Pagemill Pastures and Portola Pastures (I've boarded at both in the past, and I don't like how they manage feeding and fence repairs etc.).

I've looked on BAEN, so what I'm hoping for here are some leads to other places that aren't commonly known, aren't listed on BAEN, etc.

Thanks!

Khai colicked again last night, and was in shock and likely dying when the vet arrived and put him down. I wasn't able to get there in time, I'm glad I left instructions with the Vet and barn manager in Watsonville authorizing them to put him down if it was serious as he wasn't a surgery candidate at age 28. Based on the off-n-on colic this past week and the Vet's exam on Saturday, the best guess is that he ruptured an intestine.

I've had him for 18 years, and I'm going to miss him terribly. Run free over the Rainbow bridge, my old friend.

Hey there fellow riders - I thought folks here might be interested in hearing about the week-long riding trip I just did in Valle de Bravo, Mexico. My travelogue and photos are here:

http://www.updgrave.com/bevz/Mexico03

This was booked through Equitours, a company that arranges riding trips all over the world. It was awesome - amazing scenery, great horses, some challenging riding, and wonderful food and accomodations. I will definitely be going on more of these trips.

My poor sick filly. She was fine on Saturday morning, and very sick by Saturday afternoon. Swollen throat and lumps on her jaw, difficulty swallowing. She tried to eat her medicated grain but couldn't swallow it! So she got meds (antibiotics and bute) by syringe. She was feeling much better by Sunday night. I didn't get any pictures of her on Sunday, but I'm going to upload one of the ones from Saturday. Send good healing vibes her way, OK?
